New HD Webcams Plus Advanced Online Video Conferencing Services Deliver High Quality for Less Cost than Standalone Systems

Benefits of Business Video Conferencing Extend to Small and Mid-Size Firms with Online Services from Nefsis and HD-capable webcams such as Logitech C910, Microsoft LifeCam

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — October 20, 2010 — Online video conferencing services innovator Nefsis® reports wider Nefsis customer adoption of HD-capable webcams, such as the Logitech HD Pro Webcam C910 and Microsoft Lifecam Cinema HD. These devices are HD capable and offer street prices under $100 (USD) marking an industry turning point: they are dramatically less expensive than traditional stand alone systems with excellent, business-grade picture quality. These peripherals are supported by Nefsis and other online services — e.g., Citrix® GotoMeeting HD Faces announced earlier in October — challenging traditional stand-alone systems such as those manufactured by Polycom® and Tandberg®.

The video conferencing hardware industry is comprised mostly of end-point manufacturers Polycom (Nasdaq: PLCM) and Tandberg (a division of Cisco, NASDAQ: CSCO), whose products are common in large enterprise corporate and government installations. During recent years, however, webcams and built-in laptop cameras have dwarfed unit shipments of stand-alone systems, and consumer services such as Skype, AOL, and MSN have introduced video conferencing to millions of people. Rising expectations, inexpensive high-quality webcams and Internet access at virtually every desktop are driving a new category: video conferencing online services for business.

“We’re watching ‘When Worlds Collide,’ except this time it's video conferencing online services and stand-alone systems. Of course, we don't expect to see online services displacing the installed base of telepresence and boardroom systems, but online services will most definitely bring far more business people into video conferencing than all previous generations of video technology combined,” said Tom Toperczer, vice president of marketing for Nefsis.

“In particular, we see online services as compelling for small and medium-sized businesses, where picture quality, speed and security are required, but budgets and staffing constraints rule-out more expensive stand-alone systems and their associated dedicated circuit requirements.”

Nefsis was the first cloud-based video conferencing online service. Nefsis supports multipoint HD video conferencing for business, including HD-capable webcams such as the Logitech C910 and the Microsoft Lifecam, plus conference room pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras such as the Sony HD1. The latter is capable of 720p and 1080p at full frame rates. The current generation of USB 2.0 webcams are limited to 720p continuous picture quality while conferencing. The next generation of webcams will not have USB 2.0 limitations, and will be able to provide 1080p at 30 frames/second sustained. For practical business applications, 720p picture quality with built-in web collaboration rivals stand-alone systems at far lower cost and maintenance complexity, added Nefsis officials.

Nefsis recently posted reviews, photos and sample videos of the Logitech C910 and Microsoft Lifecam on its website. The company’s entry-level offering Nefsis Basic provides two-party web and video conferencing for home-office professionals for free. Nefsis Professional, the company’s commercial application, supports company-wide use, conference rooms, multipoint HD and includes more advanced web collaboration features. These web-based video conferencing online services are available now at the Nefsis website (Free Trial).
