There are a few ways you can fine tune the audio. We will work directly with the control panel. To open the control panel within the Windows OS select Start | Run | Type Control Panel | Press Enter.

For Windows XP double click the ‘Sounds and Audio Devices’ icon to bring up the properties for those devices.




You will then see the properties window for the Sound and Audio devices. You will then see the Volume tab and from there you can adjust the master volume or open up the individual volume levels for each audio device.



When you select ‘Advanced’ the main Volume Control window will show. From there you can adjust the volume levels for each individual item listed.



If you select ‘Options’ then ‘Properties’ you will be taken to a screen that allows you to choose what devices to display within the Volume Control window. One thing you want to ensure is the ‘Mic Volume’ is muted within the Volume Control window for playback devices. To do that you must select the ‘Playback’ radial dial and check ‘Mic Volume’ then select ‘OK’.



You can then mute the Mic on playback.



You can also adjust the recording volume for the Mic. To do so you must change the Volume Controls from playback to recording. With the Volume Control open, like you did before, select ‘Options’ then ‘Properties’. From there select the radial dial for ‘Recording’ and then check the box next to ‘Mic Volume’ and select ‘OK’.



You will then see the following Volume Control window for the Mic recording levels. Adjust accordingly.



To verify the correct audio devices are enabled open up the ‘Sound and Audio devices’ within the control panel. Directions for doing so are at the beginning of this document. Once opened select the audio tab and ensure the correct devices are listed under ‘Default device’. If they are not you can select the drop down arrow and choose the correct devices.



Next you can select the ‘Voice’ tab and ensure that the correct recording device is also listed under ‘Voice recording’. If it is not selected click the drop down and choose the correct device.



The following is information for Windows Vista\7 systems.


To begin adjust the audio for Windows Vista/7 you can right click on the sound icon in the system tray and choose ‘Playback devices’.



The ‘Sound’ properties window will open with the playback devices listed. The default playback device will have a green check mark next to it. If the default device is not correct, select it and choose ‘Set Default’ at the bottom. Then Select the device and click ‘Properties’.



The ‘Speaker Properties’ window will open. Click the ‘Levels’ tab.



From there you can adjust the volume level for the speakers and ensure that the Mic is muted on playback.



Next you can select the ‘Balance’ button to adjust the audio balance.



Next we will adjust the Microphone volume levels. To do so select the ‘Recording’ tab.



When you select the ‘Recording’ tab you will see the following dialog box. The default recording device will have a green check next to it. If the device checked is not the correct default device then select the appropriate recording device and click ‘Set Default’ at the bottom. With the default device selected click the ‘Properties’ button.



When the ‘Microphone Properties’ window will pop up select the ‘Levels’ tab.



From there you can adjust the Mic volume levels accordingly.



Now that we know how to adjust the audio within the Windows operating system; we will now learn how to adjust the audio within a Nefsis Conference.

If you cannot hear anyone and the names are not lighting up in green then there is a good possibility that audio is currently muted. To unmute select the ‘Audio’ tab within the conference and select ‘Unmute All’.



You will also see options for ‘Narrowband’ and ‘Wideband’. The following describes what those options mean.

Narrowband:

Narrowband audio can be used in circumstances where either audio quality or clarity is not important or when your Internet bandwidth is consistently low. This will provide lower-quality audio similar to that of a cell / mobile phone.

Wideband:

Wideband audio is used by default for Nefsis conferences. This often provides the best audio quality and will be suitable for most conferencing scenarios.

Next we will look at adjusting the audio levels within a Nefsis conference. After joining a Nefsis conference, right click on your name and select ‘Audio Settings’. You will see a volume slider that allows you to raise\lower the volume levels. You can adjust the settings accordingly. If you wish to adjust the other participant’s audio, you must be a host of the conference.



Keep in mind that the correct audio devices must be selected for you to hear or be heard. You can match up the devices with the default devices mentioned earlier in this article.

If you are hearing echo or background noise then select the ‘Acoustic Echo Cancellation’ & ‘Adaptive Noise Cancellation’ check boxes. However, do not check those boxes if you have a headset with echo and noise cancellation features built into the device.

It is also a good practice to use earbuds if you are using a laptop, do not have a headset and meeting participants are complaining of echo’ing. The echo can occur when you have a built-in mic and the audio is playing through the speakers. The mic will pick up the audio from the speakers and play in the meeting.

If you have a more advanced setup and are receiving bad audio then there is a strong possibility that the setup is not correct. When this occurs it is best to ensure that all cables are plugged into the appropriate inputs\outputs. You must also ensure that the mic is muted under the playback devices.
